Recently I have been exploring cannabis concentrates as an alternative to smoking flower. The main downside to smoking concentrates (or “dabbing”) is that the material must be heated to a very high temperature. This means that the resulting smoke can be harsh, so concentrates are generally smoked using a dab rig – a bubbler with a quartz “banger” which is heated to the correct temperature with a torch of some sort.
This is difficult to manage accurately, and a little dangerous! Previously I have used the G Pen Hyer, pairing it with a dab rig or the Stundenglass, and that has worked great, but I have been missing the ability to smoke concentrates in a more contained, less elaborate, and indeed more portable way.
Review: G Pen Hyer Vaporizer
Recently I have noticed that Stündenglass have been cross-promoting the G Pen Hyer Vaporizer as being ideally suited to pairing with their gravity bong. I’m a big fan of the Stündenglass Kompact so I decided to give it a whirl.…
Enter the G Pen Roam from Grenco. It’s a handheld vape that houses a water pipe within, allowing you to carry around a dab rig in your pocket!
The build quality is comparable to the Hyer – it feels solid and well-made in your hand. It’s held together with strong magnets, which make it easy to take apart to clean but keep it solidly together while in use, and feel very satisfying when they clunk together. The controls are very similar to the Hyer, but the Roam has a welcome LCD screen – an improvement over the color-coded lights of the Hyer.
And it works great! Concentrates are always going to be harsher to smoke, but the Roam is certainly no harsher than any dab rig or “e-nail” (electronic dab rig) that I’ve used despite the small amount of water it contains. (It really is a tiny amount – but it does the job)!
What is the Effect of Water Filtration on Cannabis Smoke?
One of the most popular ways of smoking cannabis is to use a water pipe (also known as a bong or a hookah). Water pipes are used to filter weed smoke through water. They do this in a variety of…
I wish it had a USB-C charger rather than the Micro USB- those connectors are just annoying! And the included instructions do a good job of telling how to use the vape once it’s set up, but they don’t tell you how to open it and put the water in – useful information! Luckily Grenco has you covered with this useful video:
If you have a ritual around dabbing that you like, this does take the fun out of it. But if you don’t feel the need to be good at smoking in some way and just want to try concentrates with the minimum of fuss and no other investment required then this is a great investment.
One word of warning: if this is your first time smoking concentrates, get ready – you are about to get super high, super fast. Take it easy at first, and enjoy the smoke!
