Review: G Pen Hyer Vaporizer

Recently I have noticed that Stündenglass have been cross-promoting the G Pen Hyer Vaporizer as being ideally suited to pairing with their gravity bong. I’m a big fan of the Stündenglass Kompact so I decided to give it a whirl.

I had been using my Mighty+ Vaporizer from Storz & Bickel with an adaptor, and it works, but it was a little unwieldy. The Mighty+ is a great dry herb vape and still very much my go-to for a simple session, but it doesn’t hold a ton of weed and the sessions are short. If I’m settling down with some big hardware I don’t want to move for a while. Also, the size of the Mighty+ isn’t ideal for attaching to something else – it’s ok with something table-based like the Stündenglass, but if you want to use a hand-held bubbler it’s heavy and awkward.

No Mouthpiece? What?

Enter the Hyer. This is an unusual vape in that it has no mouthpiece. Other vapes have a mouthpiece you use to draw the vapor and you can get attachments for bubblers or bongs, but the Hyer only has a 14mm male adapter – you’ll need to hook it up to something else to use it.

And as you might expect, a product is designed for a specific use case it is better at it than one designed for something else with an optional attachment. I have certainly found this to be the case with the Hyer.

Got a bit of disposable income and a desire to upgrade your cannabis experience? Then read on, this might just be the luxury gravity bong you have been looking for! Introduction My first time smoking cannabis was a quickly assembled…

Unique Form Factor

It achieves its form factor by separating the heating part from the battery. The battery unit contains all the controls and is hefty enough to be easy to use – no fiddly buttons or unclear displays. It charges using a USB-C cable, and pass-through charging is enabled. The cable is solid and attaches the battery to the vape using strong magnets at both ends. It is just long enough – you almost wish it were a bit longer, but not quite!

Not having to contain the battery frees up the vape to be small, light, and mostly chamber. I should note at this point that the Hyer is primarily sold as a dab rig – the chamber is optimized for concentrates. There is a dry herb chamber available to buy as an optional extra, and that’s what I did as I’m not really a concentrates guy. It swaps out easily and feels exactly as though it were part of the vape from the get-go, which is what you want. The Hyer is smart enough to know which chamber is attached and adjust the temperature controls accordingly (concentrates require a much higher temperature than weed).

The Types of Bubbler Pipe

The Types of Bubbler Pipe

I’ve written about bongs before, but not bubblers. They are both ways of passing marijuana smoke or vapor through water to filter it – the difference is that bongs use some external force such as gravity to propel the smoke…

So How Is It?

It works great! As advertised, it pairs really well with the Stündenglass, but I have also found myself sitting back on the couch using a hand-held recycler and finding the experience extremely pleasurable. I very quickly got into a rhythm with the heat settings, working my way through the five possible temperatures from low to high.

The controls aren’t as clear and intuitive as the Mighty+ and it lacks the ability to heat to any arbitrary specific temperature, and it uses color so may be a challenge for the color blind. I found I adapted to it very quickly and now feel like an old pro. I don’t know if I would feel the same way if I put it away for a few months – would I remember how it worked, or would I need to go digging up the manual as I did for the DaVinci Miqro? The Mighty+ certainly doesn’t have that problem.

Spend some time with it and it quickly becomes clear that this is probably the only vaporizer you are ever going to need.

Conclusion

All in all, I highly recommend the G Pen Hyer. I wish it came with a few more accessories, like a poker or some kind of device to help with loading, but these aren’t big problems and if this isn’t your first turn around the vape track you probably already have something that will do the job. Even if you don’t, it’s not that hard 🙂

If you like using a bong or a bubbler and want a vape to pair them with rather than burn weed, you can’t do better than the Hyer. It’s not good for out and about, but if you’re staying put this has you covered. I might even get my hands on some concentrates and try that – if I do I’ll come back and update!
